Nissan vs Toyota: Battle for supremacy

IF you are searching for a new or a used vehicle but cannot decide on which brand you would like to focus on, you are certainly not alone.

It is far from uncommon to hear drivers arguing the merits of Nissan versus Toyota.

Since these two Japanese manufacturers compete in almost every segment, it is not hard to see why.

There is no denying that both manufacturers offer serious benefits to their drivers.

However, Toyota is by far more popular and has a reputation for reliability that gives it a serious edge in this competition.

What is more, Toyota tends to offer more options in each segment, so, in general, you will have less trouble finding exactly what you are looking for.

But we should note that Nissan is a serious competitor.

Reliability

Toyota has had a reputation as one of the most reliable manufacturers for years, and it is not just talk. Their models continually spend longer on the road and retain more of their value over time than otherwise comparable Nissan vehicles.

As an example, the 2019 Toyota Camry is expected to retain 49 percent of its value after three years on the road. The 2019 Nissan Altima will drop to just 41 percent of its original value after the same period.

In their 2018 dependability rankings, which assess vehicles after three years on the road, experts at JD Power gave “Most Dependable” awards to the 2015 Toyota Prius and the 2015 Toyota Tacoma. Nissan did not earn a single “Most Dependable Award” that year.

Standard features

Having said this, it is worth pointing out that Nissan relies on factors other than reliability in order to help their vehicles sell.

Since these models often lack the name recognition of their competitors, they usually come equipped with a wider range of standard features.

Just for starters, a package like Nissan Intelligent Mobility includes more features than the otherwise-comparable Toyota Safety Sense. What is more, while many used Toyota vehicles lack connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Nissan tends to offer a wide array of connectivity options, even in the lower-end trims of its lineup.

Model choice

While Toyota has the bigger market share and sales, there are some areas where Nissan does very well, even better than Toyota.

If you are searching for a full-size truck, you might prefer the power of the Nissan Titan to that of the Toyota Tundra.

In the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the Nissan Rogue offers a more enjoyable touring experience than the Toyota C-HR.

That said, with a total of 23 Toyota models compared to just 16 from Nissan, it goes without saying that you will have more options if you decide to drive with Toyota.

If you would like to drive a new minivan, you really only have one option. Nissan has ended production of the Quest, but Toyota is still manufacturing the Sienna — and it is one of the sharpest options in the segment.

Toyota has a history of leading the way forward with hybrid cars like the Prius. However, if you would like to drive a fully electric car today, the Nissan Leaf is the vehicle for you.

The sports/performance segment of vehicles sees an incredible revival within Toyota’s performance division. Toyota has one of the best budget performance “analog” sports cars available — the GR86.

Nissan has no alternative sports equivalent in the price range of the 86 but competes with the Toyota Supra with their redesigned Nissan Z — both phenomenal driving vehicles that sport the horsepower to match.

In the evolving debate of Nissan vs Toyota and their offerings, consumers can feel at ease knowing both brands have their advantages and make excellent cars.

With both of these manufacturers offering many compelling vehicles, you may just have to base your decision on how you feel behind the wheel! — Major World
