What The Heck
IN a chilling case that tests the proverb “blood is thicker than water”, a 24-year-old man from Njube has appeared in court for allegedly striking his elder brother on the forehead with a machete following a dispute over a mango tree.
Owen Mloyi appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube facing a physical abuse charge.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to March 25.
Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu told the court that Mloyi is the younger brother of the complainant, 31-year-old Bhekumuzi Sibanda.
The court heard that on March 9, 2026, at approximately 11am, Sibanda warned Mloyi to stop cutting down a mango tree in their yard.
A heated misunderstanding ensued, during which Mloyi allegedly turned on his brother and struck him once on the forehead with a machete. Sibanda was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest. — Bulawayo Bureau

Man (53) killed in
dispute over watch
A 33-year-old man from Nketa 9, Bulawayo, has been arrested over the brutal murder of 53-year-old Tonderai Blessing Sithole, from the same suburb, after accusing him of withholding his share from the sale of a watch.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said on the morning of March 11, 2026, Zibusiso Ndlovu and the deceased left for the city centre together.
Ndlovu reportedly returned home alone later that evening at approximately 7.30pm.
“At about 10pm, Sithole arrived at Ndlovu’s residence, where a misunderstanding arose over the watch money.
“During the altercation, Ndlovu allegedly assaulted Sithole several times with a log, small axe and wooden handle, inflicting visible injuries all over his body,” said Insp Msebele.
The court heard that instead of seeking medical assistance, the suspect kept the critically injured man at his residence for three days, attempting to “nurse” his wounds in secret. By 3am on the third day, Sithole’s condition deteriorated, prompting Ndlovu to finally inform the deceased’s mother.
“An ambulance was summoned to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. A police report was subsequently filed, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” Insp Msebele added. — Bulawayo Bureau

Neighbour sentenced to
15 years for brutal rape
A 36-year-old Kezi man who ambushed his neighbour’s daughter aged 15 and raped her while she was walking home has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Mbongeni Moyo pleaded not guilty to the charges but was convicted by Gwanda regional magistrate Ms Sithembiso Ndebele due to overwhelming evidence.
In passing the sentence, Ms Ndebele ruled that Moyo deserved a deterrent penalty, describing him as a “danger to the community”.
“The streets are no longer safe because of people like the accused; therefore, a sentence that sets an example for like-minded individuals is necessary,” she stated.
Prosecutor Ngonidzashe Shumba told the court that on December 16, at approximately 4pm, the complainant was returning from her grandmother’s homestead when she came across Moyo.
As they were walking in the same direction, Moyo reportedly made romantic advances towards the teenager, which she rejected.
Upon reaching a secluded area, Moyo grabbed the girl and dragged her into the bush, where he raped her.
The court heard that Moyo fled the scene soon after the assault, leaving behind a cap he had been wearing.
Three passersby found the complainant shortly after the incident. After she narrated her ordeal, the villagers escorted her home.
A police report was subsequently filed, leading to Moyo’s arrest. — Matabeleland South Bureau
