NKETA Primary School has won the Bulawayo Primary Schools HIV and Aids Quiz competition held at Bulawayo City Hall on Friday.
The competition is a National Aids Council (Nac) initiative aimed at imparting in primary schoolchildren life skills on HIV and Aids-related issues.

Among the competing schools were Nketa, Ngwalongwalo,Mtshane, Matshamhlope, Mahatshula, St Patrick’s, Manyewu, Robert Tredgold and Amaswazi.  Pupils were expected to answer questions related to HIV and Aids and child abuse.

Nketa Primary School won the first prize with 47 points and walked away with a trophy, T-shirts and satchels for their school. Ngwalongwalo came second with 46 points and walked away with a shield, T-shirts and satchels, followed by Ntshane with 45 points.

Speaking at the awards presentation ceremony, Nac acting provincial coordinator for Bulawayo, Mr Douglas Moyo said this was an initiative to raise HIV and Aids awareness among schoolchildren to prevent new infections in their generation.

“We decided to go down to primary schools to introduce a forum that will expose children to HIV and Aids related issues. This initiative will make it easy to prevent new HIV infections in children because they are taught about it at an early age. They are also empowered on social issues and life skills in general,” said Mr Moyo.

He commended school heads and teachers for working with Nac in organising the competition from district up to provincial level.
The guest of honour, Bulawayo Provincial Director of Education, Mr Dan Moyo, said the initiative was important because it brought another dimension into primary schools curriculum.

“We are proud to be part of this programme because it has brought another dimension into primary schools curriculum. Our children are taught about HIV and Aids related issues, child abuse and other social issues in preparation for the quiz competition.” said Mr Moyo.
