WHEN Constable Stanford Mutizwa allegedly forced a kombi driver to bribe him with US$80, he never knew that the tables would turn.
Mutizwa, stationed at Nkulumane Police Station in Bulawayo, allegedly approached a kombi parked near Nkulumane Clinic and told the driver that he was under arrest for violating traffic laws.
“While he was in the company of two other police officers, Mutizwa got into the Kombi and told the driver that he was under arrest for violating traffic rules. He demanded US$40. Ronald (driver) phoned his boss, Suggest Bvemura, who quickly drove to the scene,” said the source.
Upon arrival, he was told that his kombi was under arrest and it is said Mutizwa demanded money to release it.
“Bvemura gave him US$40 and he freed his car without giving him a receipt of the specific offence that he was accused of having committed,” said the source.
Later on the same day, Mutizwa allegedly pounced on Bvemura’s other commuter omnibus. He once again accused the driver of the kombi for having violated traffic rules and allegedly demanded US$80.
“Bvemura pleaded with him to reduce it to US$40, to which Mutizwa agreed and took it. He left. Bvemura got suspicious because he was not given an admission of guilt form to sign, as a result, he reported the incident at Bulawayo Central Police Station leading to the arrest of Mutizwa,” said the source.
The case was recorded under case number IR 6258/24. Bulawayo Provincial Spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube could not be reached for comment.
Bvemura only said: “The incident happened. I cannot comment further because the matter is under investigation.”
