THE Nkulumane Old Mutual 10km Fun Run registration is now open and will be for free, the organisers of the event have said.
The event will take place on June 1.
Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Manuel Mpofu said free registration is a welcome development that will also allow school pupils to register for the race on their own.
“We are expecting the whole of Bulawayo to come in numbers as registration is going to be free which is good for athletes and the community at large because they will get a chance to take part in the fun run just to stay fit.
“Primary and secondary schools can now register, their involvement will help lay a good foundation for our future athletes, so they should come in numbers also,” Mpofu said.
He said they expect an increased number of participants after a total of 300 athletes participated in last year’s competition.
“We encourage local athletes to come in numbers because we don’t like to see the trophy being taken away like what has been happening in the past. We expect even more participants this time,” said Mpofu.
Athletes are set to compete in the 10km race and 5km fun runs.
Men and women will feature in the open race, veterans, masters, grandmasters and juniors from 16-19 year categories.
Mpofu said the sponsors were yet to reveal monetary prizes for the winners of the race.
“The sponsors are yet to disclose prizes for the winners but I can safely say that winners will walk away with handsome prizes. The prizes might be disclosed a day before the race,” he said.
Rutendo Nyahora and Wirimai Juwawo won the women and men’s category in last year’s edition.
