After a 15-year sabbatical, Canada-based multi-talented performer Nomathamsanqa “Nkwali” Mkhwananzi has made a return to the theatre stage, starring in the play Through a Film Darkly, which ran at the Anvil Theatre in Canada from July 24 to 27.

The play, presented by Akofena Afro-Theatre Society, featured a cast including Nkwali as Rebecca, Chisom Akomas (Fenyinka), Beth Culshaw (Janet), Ross Oteri (Addo), Fikky Bajela (Ofori), and Warren Agyare as Adamu.

Written by Joe de Graft and directed by Stephen Yaw Oppong, Through a Film Darkly draws inspiration from post-independence Ghana, delving into themes of identity, belonging, and the enduring shadows of colonialism.

The narrative revolves around the marriage between Janet, a young English woman, and her Ghanaian husband, Fenyinka, as it examines the complexities of interracial relationships, xenophobia, and the quest to find a sense of belonging in a society shaped by history.
