No more licences: Potraz

Potraz public affairs manager Ms Sibonginkosi Muteyiwa told CAJ News yesterday that there has been a lot of interest in the country’s telecommunications sector but argued that the Posts and Telecommunications Act (12:05) stipulated that the country should have only three mobile phone operators and two fixed phone operators.

“There have been a number of potential investors from foreign countries such as India, China and South Africa asking about requirements for joining the mobile telecommunications sector. But there will be some time before the sector is opened up,” said Ms Muteyiwa.
She added: “The Posts and Telecommunication Act (12:05) allows the country to have three mobile phone players and two fixed phone companies. And unless policymakers amend that Act, the number of players will remain the same for the time being.”

At present there are three mobile telecommunication companies operating in Zimbabwe, which comprise Econet, Telecel and NetOne and one fixed phone operator TelOne. “However, let me hasten to say that we have encouraged players to invite partners to ride on their networks and grow the existing companies,” Ms Muteyiwa said.

She said if tele-density increases, tariffs will decline due to competition and subscribers will be satisfied. — CAJ News.
