Rhumba sensation Mxolisi “Mr Bones” Ndlovu is the latest artiste to relocate to Zimbabwe from South Africa, a move that is expected to intensify competition in the popular genre.
The artiste behind the Uvukile Umalambane hit joins the ranks of other Rhumba acts like Mlambos Express Band, Insimbi ZeZhwane and Godolude, who have also returned home in recent years.
While South Africa has long been seen as a hub for musical opportunities, many Rhumba musicians have made the decision to come back to Zimbabwe, citing better returns from the local market. The challenges of limited venue options and safety concerns, including occasional violence during live shows in South Africa, have contributed to this shift.
Speaking about his decision to return, Mr Bones said, “I’ve spent years in South Africa, playing countless shows, but now it’s time to come back home. I’ve never had a proper tour in Zimbabwe because we only perform during the festive season, and we often miss out on local shows as some promoters fear bringing us from South Africa, thinking we won’t draw the crowds.”
The Faka Two hit-maker said despite relocating, he will continue to perform in South Africa when hired, ensuring his presence remains felt in both countries.
To celebrate his return, a series of homecoming shows have been planned for April.
“We’ll be performing in Bulawayo on April 4, followed by Plumtree the next day, then we’ll move to Filabusi and other areas. We promise an unforgettable experience, and those who have followed us recently know the energy we bring to live shows,” Mr Bones said.
Mr Bones initially moved to South Africa in 2006 to study journalism, but later ventured into music. In addition to his musical career, he worked in various sectors, including the restaurant, tourism and electrical industries, before joining a major soft drinks company while continuing his music.
His album UGobela Usagqiza, released last year, became a hit, with the song Bangihlangabeze Nge Case (popularly known as Faka 2 Phezu Kwebhodla) topping the charts on the Rhumba scene.
Originally from Plumtree, Mr Bones will be based in Bulawayo for the most of his time, ready to make his mark on the local music scene once again.
