MBIRA music legend Ambuya Stella Chiweshe’s daughter, Virginia Mukwesha, said she left her husband in Germany because she didn’t want to deal with language barriers at her mother’s funeral.
Virginia, 57, told H-Metro that she did not want to act as an interpreter of the German language to Masembura villagers.
“Had my husband accompanied me here, I would have been busy interpreting since he is not good in spoken English.
“Amai vangu vakarwarisa nekudaro ndakava nenguva yakakura yekuvapepa saka zvekuzopirikira zvaizondipinza busy.
“My mother was too cultural, so am I. She used to bring us here, and that is why villagers know me very well.
“They know me as Muchaneta, although the name was not recorded on my national identity documents,” she said.
Virginia made sure most traditional and cultural rites were followed at her mother’s funeral.
Mbira player groups like Nyamasvisva and Vee Mhofu took turns entertaining mourners throughout the night.
Kessia Magosa, popularly known as Muchaneta in a local drama soap, drew the attention of mourners with her energetic dances to the Madandanda beat played by Vee Mhofu’s group.
