year, the assistance should not have strings attached.
The Minister said this while jointly addressing journalists with visiting Denmark state secretary for development policy, Mr Ib Peterson who had paid a courtesy on the minister call at his Munhumutapa office.
Minister Mumbengegwi said he had briefed Mr Peterson on political developments in Zimbabwe.
“Of course the question of funding of elections came up (during discussions),” said Minister Mumbengegwi.
“I indicated that even though we would appreciate, but that must not be in return of any compromise on our part. Any assistance must not be conditional, must not compromise the independence and sovereignty because it was hard won.”
Minister Mumbengegwi said he briefed Mr Peterson on the referendum.
“I also briefed him on the way towards elections and the current debate on the time of having the elections,” he said.
Denmark is one of the EU countries that imposed illegal economic sanctions on Zimbabwe in the wake of the land reform programme to correct colonial imbalances.
Mr Peterson said his meeting with Minister Mumbengegwi was one of several that he held with various Government representatives since he came among them the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Rita Makarau, and the Joint and Monitoring Implementation Committee.
“Everyone has been very open,” he said.
On development assistance, Mr Peterson said they would be assisting Harare in various areas.
On Tuesday, Mr Peterson commissioned a magistrate court in Murehwa where he officially handed over the building to the Judicial Services Commission.
