No vehicle for mayor

Senior council officials will only be entitled to the Mazda range of vehicles with the new town clerk entitled to an Isuzu twin-cab truck as part of the rationalisation programme at the debt-ridden council.
The repossessed fleet of executive vehicles will be auctioned to allow council to buy cheaper utility vehicles.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo, made the ruling when Ald Chipiyo sought clarification on the use of a council vehicle.
The vehicle that was bought for Ald Chipiyo is grounded while the one that was bought for Clr Mutingwende is being used by acting town clerk Mr Fungai Mbetsa.
“The office of mayor is not entitled to a vehicle. There should be no permanent vehicle allocations for the mayor and his deputy. But when they want to do council business they get allocated a vehicle solely for that function,” said Minister Chombo.
Ald Chipiyo and Clr Mutingwende have previously fought a bitter war over the use of council vehicles with Ald Chipiyo arguing  his junior should not enjoy similar benefits as his.
