Nomqhele Nkomo, the newly sashayed Miss Tourism International Zimbabwe in Malaysia, said the sash she now wears is more than just a piece of fabric; it’s a symbol of her country’s heritage, hard work, and hope.

Forty delegates from around the world are competing in the 28th edition of the Malaysia-based international pageant, which will conclude in the “World Final” scheduled on October 18 at the Genting International Showroom of Resorts World Genting.

The 40 delegates from 5 continents will be competing for 5 prestigious world titles, including the landmark 30th Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International.

For Nkomo, the journey to the Miss Tourism International stage is a testament to her dedication and perseverance. She expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying, “This sash is more than fabric; it’s a symbol of heritage, hard work, and hope. Zimbabwe, this one’s for you.”

“An unforgettable moment standing here as Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, ready to represent my country with pride and purpose.

“This is the beginning of a dream I’ve worked so hard for — carrying my country’s name across my heart and across borders. Being officially sashed as Miss Tourism Zimbabwe at Miss Tourism International is more than a title.”

In Malaysia, Nkomo has been having the most delightful experience exploring their stunning collection — a true reflection of elegance, creativity, and bold confidence.

The Philippines is the best-performing country in the Miss Tourism International pageant, with six Mutya ng Pilipinas queens taking home the title. Before Barrido, the title also went to Peachy Manzano, Rizzini Alexis Gomez, Angelie Dione Gomez, Jannie Alipo-on, and Cyrille Payumo.

Liana Barrido from the Philippians who is the reigning Miss Tourism International will hand over her crown to the winner.

Before Barrido, the Miss Tourism International crown also went to her fellow Mutya ng Pilipinas queens Peachy Manzano in 2000, the late Rizzini Alexis Gomez in 2012, Angeli Dione Gomez in 2013, Jannie Alipo-on in 2017, and Cyrille Payumo in 2019.

The Philippines remains the most successful country in the Miss Tourism International pageant, further widening its lead over Thailand’s three crown haul. As a first year journalism student at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Nkomo is also a talented designer and spoken word poet, a creative blend that sets her apart.

Over the years, Nkomo has refined her craft, competing in poetry slams and performing at various events.

Her talent was recognised last year with the Outstanding Poet award at the Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards (Praca).
