Norton girl defies odds, gets Under 20 call up at 15

Zimpapers Sports Hub Reporter

A 15-year-old girl, who was raised by a single mother in the township of Norton, is part of the National Girls’ Under 20 side that will represent Zimbabwe at the Region 5 Youth Games.

Merian Tanyaradzwa Genti, is a product of Norton based Bright Stars Academy and is now turning out for MWOS Queens on a loan deal.

She turned 15 in April and is the youngest player among the 19-member squad that left for Namibia on Tuesday morning.

The Government has committed a whopping US$1,4 million funding for Team Zimbabwe which comprises 197 athletes and 80 officials, ahead of the multi-sport regional showpiece that runs from July 4 to 13 in Namibia.

However, it is the call up of 15-year-old Genti, that has torched off some emotions and has also proven that one’s background cannot be a barrier to success.

Genti joined Bright Stars Academy at the age of 5 and is slowly transforming into a quality midfielder.

Bright Stars Academy coach, Cephas Bhobho, one of the most respected football development agents in Norton, is predicting a bright future for Genti.

Bhobho also talks about some other talented players coming through the Bright Stars Academy conveyor belt.

“I’m thrilled to have a player in the national squad, given our humble beginnings and set up,” Bhobho told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

Zimbabwe’s Girls team will be coached by Lindiwe Ndhlovu of Platinum Royals.

Added Bhobho: “Genti’s achievement showcases the academy’s commitment and dedication.

“It’s just the beginning, we have a sound junior girls’ program.

“I expect more players to follow in Genti’s footsteps.

“The future looks bright,” added Bhobho.

The rise to prominence of Bright Stars Academy coincides with a football revival in Norton, headlined by MWOS’ amazing run in the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

The Punters have one defeat in 18 matches and currently lead the Premiership table.
