SCHOOLS are places of learning, growth and character development. Every student goes to school to gain knowledge, develop talents and prepare for a better future. However, some students destroy this important opportunity through bad behaviour that affects both their education and the school environment. Students must therefore learn to say no to all forms of misconduct and focus on discipline, respect and hard work.
Bullying is one of the major problems found in many schools today. Some students insult, threaten, beat or embarrass others because they think it makes them powerful. Bullying causes fear, stress and low self-esteem among learners. Schools should be safe places where everyone feels protected and respected. Students must treat one another with kindness, love and understanding regardless of background, appearance or academic ability.
Cyberbullying has also become a growing problem among students. Some learners use social media, WhatsApp groups, text messages and other online platforms to insult, embarrass, threaten or spread false information about others. Sharing private pictures, mocking classmates online and posting hurtful comments can seriously damage a person’s confidence and mental well-being. Students must learn to use technology responsibly and respectfully. Social media should be used for learning, communication and positive interaction, not for hurting others.
Fighting is another serious issue that must be avoided at school. Violence does not solve problems; instead, it creates injuries, hatred and suspensions. Students should learn to solve disagreements peacefully through dialogue, guidance and counselling. Respecting teachers, prefects and fellow learners helps create harmony in schools.
Stealing is also becoming common in some schools. Some students steal money, books, uniforms, phones and food from others. Stealing destroys trust and brings shame to both the student and the family. Students must learn honesty, contentment and hard work instead of taking what does not belong to them.
Students should also avoid drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and abusing drugs. These dangerous habits damage health, destroy concentration and lead to poor academic performance. Drug and substance abuse can push students into crime, violence and irresponsible behaviour. A wise student protects his or her future by staying away from drugs, beer and smoking.
Bunking lessons is another bad habit that affects many learners. Some students skip classes, hide at shops, sports fields or other places during learning time. Missing lessons leads to poor results and lack of understanding in class. Every lesson is important, and students should attend classes regularly, complete assignments and participate actively.
Students should also avoid engaging in romantic relationships at school that distract them from their studies and personal growth. Many students lose focus, perform poorly in class or end up making wrong decisions because of peer pressure and unhealthy relationships. Learners must understand the importance of self-control, discipline and respecting moral values. Young people should avoid sex before marriage because it can lead to emotional pain, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies and interrupted education. Students must protect their future by focusing on their education, goals and character development rather than rushing into adult activities before the right time.
Students should also avoid abusive language, disrespecting teachers, cheating during examinations, damaging school property, bringing dangerous weapons to school, watching inappropriate material, forming violent gangs and misusing cellphones or earphones during lessons. These behaviours distract learners from their goals and may lead to suspension, expulsion or even arrest.
Good behaviour brings success. Disciplined students respect school rules, study hard, dress properly, keep the school environment clean and encourage others to do what is right. They value education and understand that school is a stepping stone to a bright future.
In conclusion, students must reject all forms of bad behaviour and focus on building good character. Saying no to bullying, cyberbullying, fighting, stealing, smoking, drinking alcohol, unhealthy relationships and bunking lessons helps create peaceful schools where every learner can succeed. The future belongs to disciplined, responsible and focused students.
