RESCUE efforts were underway at Old Nic Mine in Killarney suburb on Thursday afternoon for a missing miner after a section of a shaft collapsed and killed another employee.

The mine collapse incident happened on Wednesday night while workers were on night shift.

The identities of the missing miner and the deceased have had not been released by Old Nic Mine authorities.

A miner who was on night shift on another section of the collapsed mine shaft said the deceased was a supervisor.

“A slab inside the shaft collapsed and killed a supervisor who was standing on one side while our colleague who is still missing was working on the other side. The shaft has been closed until he is found although we are losing hope that he will be found alive,” said the employee on condition of anonymity.

Mine manager Mr Sylvester Dhlamini said the company would be releasing a press statement before end of business on Thursday.

He declined to provide further details.
