Not much separates Twitter, Facebook

Not only are we stuck on Twitter and Facebook, we are now being called Tweeps (Twitter people) and Facebookers (Facebook users).
I have been asked a lot of times about the difference between these two but predictably in Zimbabwe, most Internet-literate users have Facebook accounts and very few of those have got the guts to make the next step to the real online synchronous world of Twitter.
Technically, if you don’t have an email or Facebook account, you are a below average user (not sure if you are a user at all), if you have a Facebook and an email account, you are an average Internet user.
But frankly if you have finally used both Facebook and Twitter and discovered their strength and weakness, you are slightly an above average Internet user, just one day you will discover the truth.
In simpler terms, Facebook is good for people who are looking for old friends and family relatives to reconnect and chat their entire life in pursuit of a catch-up, which will never be achieved of course.
Twitter is the place to get fresh news as it happens, instant answers to your questions, and consistent updates from the person or groups you are following.
Facebook has designed its platform in a manner that encourages chatting, video and picture sharing continuously that quitting is discouraged.
If you really want a full day with an ultimate time waster, Facebook will guarantee you that.
There are people willing to make responses to any post before you see a huge follow-up on one absurd gesture. Honestly, why would someone post that he is about to eat sadza, then the post gets more than 50 comments. I am not against socialising; I enjoy it whenever I have the time but it’s probably what we do with our time that really boggles my mind.
I wonder if other Facebookers have anything else to do because you rarely miss them online with their usual rhetoric. Most guys on Facebook have an obvious identity crisis, we have people desperate enough to post anything just to get comments from friends, thanks to Facebook for the block user button I have been making use of it lately.
If you can’t stand the heat then get out of the kitchen, at times I really feel Facebookers are just too perfect but not for me.
Do you get the feeling that you are in a wrong town and at times it’s easier to change location than to try and change their rules. This is exactly what I felt when I swiftly migrated to Twitter, I got exactly what I wanted, a royal welcome, and whenever I get quality service recommendation cannot be stifled.
Twitter is not ideal for looking for old friends and ranting much about the past, in fact it is totally opposite to that.
Ideally, Twitter is the place to meet new friends, get fresh news, follow professionals with common interests, and get instant updates as they occur.
Twitter is about what’s happening not what happened, so when you really feel your buddies are not up to stitches just click the unfollow button and keep up with the movers.
In a real world scenario Facebookers are mainly like those who meet for a high school reunion. They talk much about their past and share their spectacular moments, they all have something in common and they desperately try to win attention over each other and are not so cautious about the language or gestures they make.
Twitter people can be likened to mature professionals who meet for the first time, discussing over a braai or cook out where the environment encourages sharing of ideas and mentoring, forthcoming events and strategic moves to answer today’s questions are discussed.
There is an answer for every question or you can be easily directed to a link where a known remedy lies, but if you really prove to be a shenanigan then you might as well braai alone. It’s much easier to lose a follower!
So much activity and Internet traffic is going the social network way. Arguably Facebook commands a larger chunk of the social networkers but do the numbers really tell the best or it’s a mere reflection of the current status quo. Personally, I have concluded that the differences between these two giants will not make one superior over the other but it’s a reason for co-existence.
We will always need these two platforms as their differences really make a sound technological divide.
Twitter encourages you to share an idea in minimum size possible and saves the long story for the link, I love the bitly.com and Google shortener link keeps things smarter and shorter on your webpage.
It limits your posts to only 140 characters, thus you just go straight to the point. Both platforms support messages but Twitter gives you RSS feeds even when you are not logged on.
On Twitter you can follow anyone without confirmation unless the user blocks you.
Facebook has an all in one interface of chat, instant messages, video sharing and messaging that it is slowly replacing traditional email services.
