A HANDWRITTEN note penned by a traumatised 14-year-old girl has unmasked a sexual predator and sent him to prison for 16 years.
The shocking letter revealed the horror the girl suffered at the hands of her 21-year-old cousin.
The case came to light after the girl’s grandmother returned home after being away for a week.
Instead of a verbal greeting, the terrified girl handed the old woman a piece of paper.
The grandmother immediately summoned the girl’s mother who lives in another location.
When the mother arrived, she read the letter of tears. She asked her daughter to explain further and the girl opened up to disclose the full, dirty details of the abuse.
This damning piece of evidence led to the arrest of the Old Pumula man.
The sex pest, whose name is withheld to protect the victim, appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Pasipanodya Maturure, who convicted him of rape and slapped him with a 16-year jail term.
The court heard that on 14 October 2025, the girl was alone at home around 7PM preparing dinner.
The accused entered the house and ordered her to strip.
When she refused, the brute grabbed her and forcibly undressed her.
He forced her to lie on the floor and raped her once without protection before walking out and leaving her on the floor.
In passing sentence, Magistrate Maturure slammed the man for betraying his duty as a brother.
He said the victim wrote the letter because she had been violated in the one place she was supposed to feel safe.
Maturure noted that it is an abomination for cousins to have sexual intercourse.
He expressed concern that the man had unprotected sex with a mere child. This risked infecting her with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or causing an unwanted pregnancy.
The magistrate ruled that the rape was committed in aggravated circumstances.
The accused pleaded not guilty. He claimed the letter was a fabrication.
In his defense, he said the girl wrote the lies because she was disrespectful and hated him for reprimanding her.
He claimed he was out drinking beer with friends and only returned home at 9PM.
The court rejected his story.
Prosecuting, Christina Manyika proved that the letter was a genuine cry for help that led to the police report and a medical examination at Mpilo Central Hospital.
