were revived in 2010, featured in the combined Midlands and Matabeleland League for two seasons before gaining promotion into the top-flight rugby league in the country this year.
National Rugby League chairman Nody Kanyagarara said the mining town will now host some of the top-flight matches this year at the McAdam rugby grounds.
“We want to thank Delta Beverages for the launch of the 2013 Lion Lager National Rugby League, the League has been consistent for over seven years now and it is growing.
“It has become one of the Rugby’s best-sponsored brand and knows no borders, celebrated and sought after by many rugby enthusiasts inside and beyond our borders, thus putting us on the world map of the game.
“The community of Zvshavane is so passionate about rugby and we are very proud to be part of the history.
“McAdam has the history of hosting some big battles and some big teams have fallen at the hands of the Zvishavane-based team at this stadium.
“So this year should not be different,” said Kanyangara.
He said the sport was developing as evidenced by the fact that it was now being played in four different towns this year, unlike last year when only three towns had the privilege of playing host.
“The Rugby League season will this year be played in four different cities for the first time in a long time,” said Kanyangarara. The eight teams who will play in the league this season are Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians, Old Miltonians, Panthers, Zvishavane Bulls, Old Georgians, Gweru Rugby Club and Matabeleland Warriors.
Meanwhile, Delta Beverages, through their Lion Lager brand, yesterday committed themselves to the sponsorship of the league.
Delta marketing manager Patricia Murambinda, speaking on behalf of the company’s executive director Maxen Karombo, said they were proud to be associated with NRL.
“Our sponsorship has added value to rugby both within the country and the world over. I believe 2013 will be an exciting season for all, and various activities will be lined up to better our game in Zimbabwe. “We will inspire and encourage our rugby fans to come in numbers and support their teams.”
