WITH just days before the 2023 season starts, the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) has taken steps to weed out hooliganism by holding a safety and security officers’ training in Harare yesterday.
Last year’s runners-up Herentals U-20 and pre-season favourites Golden Eagles, who are under the tutelage of Gilbert Mushangazhike, will headline the start of the 2023 season when they clash at Ellis Robins on Saturday. NRSL chairperson Martin Kweza said the safety and security of stakeholders at all the match venues “remains of paramount importance”.
“The league will continue to invest in the training and development of our security personnel for us to ensure a safe and secure environment during and after the matches,’’ he said.
Last year, the league attracted good crowds at most matches.
High-profile clashes between Simba Bhora and Golden Eagles, Karoi United and Chegutu Pirates, as well as Trojan Stars and Simba Bhora, were some of the major drawcards.
The Axis Solutions Super 8 cup final between Golden Eagles and Simba Bhora at Rufaro on October 23 also capped a fine season for the NRSL.
“We need to use football to continue to unite people and we cannot achieve on this if we fail to provide a safe and secure environment at all our football matches,” said Kweza.
