“We have since reduced our 6 million tonnes target to 4,3 million tones with 3,8 already moved so far this year,” he said.
Rtd Air Commodore Karakadzai said the liquidity in the economy was causing most companies to operate below capacity, thereby reducing business for the utility.
“Most of them are making orders for small quantities of raw materials for sustainability,” he said.
Goods that the NRZ moves in bulk include coal and fuel. Over 70 percent of bulk goods are transported by road.
“This is negatively impacting on our pricing structure,” said Rtd Air Commodore Karakadzai said.
Last month the NRZ and the Hwange Colliery Company signed a Service Level Agreement to guarantee transportation of coal to various destinations inside and outside the country.
Like many other public utilities, the NRZ suffered the brunt of sanctions that Western countries imposed on Zimbabwe as retribution for expropriating prime agricultural land from the minority whites and redistributing it to the black majority.
The parastatal experienced widespread vandalism of its equipment and infrastructure and could not refurbish its aged fleet.
It is estimated that the NRZ requires about US$2 billion in the next 10 years for recapitalisation whilst about US$400 million is required in the short to medium term to enhance capacity. — New Ziana.
