NATIONAL Railways of Zimbabwe workers who have gone for more than 10 months without salaries last week took to the streets in Mutare demanding an urgent address of their grievances.
Their bone of contention is that the company is top heavy with a big chunk of directors who are bleeding the railway company.
The president of the Railway Artisan Union in Mutare, Mr Shadreck Rufo Mutakura, said the demonstration was to alert the Government on the hard times facing the workers.
“The government as a major stakeholder should address the needs of the people by paying them their salaries of over 10 months now. The workers do not believe that the company cannot afford to pay them because the numbers of employees has been reduced from over 9 000 to 6 700.
“Workers believe that management is top heavy with five directors and one general manager. The top management is crowded with five directors and one general manager and each one of these has subordinates.
“We tried to seek audience with the responsible Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development because we wanted to raise the management concern,” said Mr Mutakura
He said if NRZ had a substantive general manager the situation was going to improve.
“As a company we need a general manager who can address our issues permanently not the obtaining situation where we have someone who is acting and failing to make concrete decisions,” said Mr Mutakura.
