THE newly-appointed board chairman of the National Social Security Authority and his team must work towards achieving sustainable social security goals as envisaged in Vision 2030 of a middle-income society, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Professor Paul Mavima, said yesterday.
Announcing the appointment of Dr Emmanuel Fundira as the new NSSA board chair, Prof Mavima said NSSA had a huge responsibility of ensuring sustainable social security towards achieving an upper middle-income economy and requires effective board members.
“I am pleased to be here today to announce the appointment of Dr Emmanuel Anesu Fundira as a substantive member and chairperson of the board of directors of the National Social Security Authority.
“His appointment is with immediate effect and is based on several consultative processes and good recommendations on his qualifications and experience related to the work that NSSA does”, said Prof Mavima.
“Dr Fundira’s leadership credentials and experience are a perfect fit for NSSA, an entity that has a huge responsibility of ensuring sustainable social security for all as is our aspiration of an upper middle income economy by 2030.”
He said NSSA board members need to work towards expanding social security to the public as enunciated in the mandate of the corporate to the public.
“The overarching mandate of NSSA, to enhance the economic well-being of the pensioner and ensure occupational health and safety in the work place, is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 1 as well as our National Development Strategy 1.”
Sustainable social security would help expand social protection programmes to eradicate poverty and cater for people who are vulnerable.
Prof Mavima said plans were underway to review the informal sector which will see all small and medium businesses operating in the informal sector transform to formalised business entities.
“Our aspiration as a nation is that we leave no one and no place behind. As such the appointment of Dr Fundira as board chairperson comes at a time where it is imperative that NSSA continues to develop and implement an all-encompassing informal sector scheme framework”.
Dr Fundira said he was ready to serve in line with the quest to achieve a middle income economy.
“I am grateful to the appointees for bestowing on me such a responsibility over a national asset of this size. It is a task I am determined to carry out together with the assistance of the people who are already there.
“We are going to work with the Ministry of Finance in making sure that whatever objectives we are trying to meet in line with NDS1 are sufficiently and adequately addressed.
“We are also going to ensure that our investments are conducted in a prudential manner to extent that we derive good value. I promise as NSSA, we are going stick to our promises,”said Dr Fundira.
