THE development of a greenbelt at Nuanetsi Ranch in Mwenezi East is proceeding according to plan with the Development Trust of Zimbabwe and seven private investors involved in the project, targeting to have put 3000 hectares under sugarcane by year end.

DTZ and the private investors, namely, Lamcent Agriculture, Byword Enterprises, Lyonais Investments, Green Corridors, Mossfield Farms, Zimbrands and Honzero Agro Projects, sealed a 25-year partnership to develop a green corridor at Nuanetsi Ranch straddling nearly 30 000ha.

The greenbelt will get irrigation water supplies from Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, with sugar cane, lucerne and citrus being the major ventures there.

Land clearing and planting of cane under the initiative started last year and the project is one of the initiatives anchoring Masvingo province’s anticipated evolution into an US$8 billion provincial economy in gross domestic product terms by the year 2030.

DTZ general manager Mr Emmanuel Jaricha yesterday disclosed that considerable progress has been made in developing the Nuanetsi green corridor in Mwenezi.

According to Mr Jaricha, plans are in motion to put 3 000 ha under seed cane on cleared land by the end of this year.
