A REGISTERED nurse from Mutare has been hauled before the courts after allegedly running an insurance scam using the names of the dead.
Shamiso Esinath Nyamundanda (née Musafari), aged 40 and stationed at Bamba Rural Health Clinic, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing three counts of fraud involving a total of US$15 000.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Nyamundanda allegedly opened life assurance policies using the identities of deceased persons between August 2022 and July 2025. The court heard that she went on to claim U$5000 per policy, pretending to be a relative of each deceased person.
“The accused person also used forged affidavits bearing her handwriting and signature,” said the NPAZ. The funds were reportedly paid directly into her bank account.
The alleged scheme unraveled when an assurance manager noticed irregularities in the documents and raised the alarm. The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nyamundanda’s arrest.
She was granted US$300 bail and is expected back in court on 9 December for routine remand.
The NPAZ warned that insurance fraud has far-reaching consequences and will not go unpunished.
“Insurance fraud undermines public confidence and harms legitimate policy holders. The law is clear, deception for personal gain will not be tolerated and professionals abusing their positions of trust will be held accountable,” said the NPAZ .
