THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) grounds were transformed into a spectacle of sound and colour yesterday as 2 504 graduates stepped forward to claim their futures. A wave of ululations and cheers erupted from the crowd of beaming parents and friends as each student — finally reaching the moment they had worked toward for years — proudly crossed the stage to receive their degree during the institution’s 31st graduation ceremony.

Yet, this celebration was about more than just caps, gowns, and the immediate triumph of the young achievers. The day was also steeped in history and honour, serving as a powerful tribute to two towering figures whose contributions have profoundly shaped Zimbabwe’s industrial and construction sectors.

Construction magnate James Ross Goddard, affectionately known as Nkosana, and renowned industrialist Busisa Moyo were conferred with honorary doctorates in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the nation.

Goddard received a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Water Engineering (Honoris Causa), while Moyo was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Leadership.

For Goddard, whose work has shaped Zimbabwe’s physical landscape through landmark construction projects, the honour was deeply personal.

“I am in disbelief and at a loss for words. This is a great honour; I never thought I would ever be honoured in such a manner. I am truly grateful to the people of Zimbabwe for the recognition,” he said, his voice filled with humility.
Moyo, a driving force in the industrial sector and a familiar name in business circles, described the award as a call to further service.

“Receiving this honorary doctorate is a testament to the resilience and innovation that drive the industrial sector in our country. I am deeply honoured to be acknowledged in this way. It really spurs me to serve the community of Zimbabwe in different ways to tackle various challenges to solve problems that we have to continue to contribute to our great nation,” he said.

He also praised the Nust staff for their collaboration
“To be honoured by your own is really touching. I have been honoured in countries like France for various contributions we have made to the economy. It is really moving if your own kith and kin look at what you are doing.”

The atmosphere throughout the day was electric. Graduates began arriving at the university grounds as early as 8AM, some chatting animatedly, others quietly reflecting on the significance of the occasion. The students’ choir filled the air with harmonious melodies, lending the ceremony a festive yet dignified tone.

The arrival of President Mnangagwa added another layer of prestige. As he entered the arena, the crowd rose to its feet in a thunderous standing ovation. “It is an incredible privilege to have President Mnangagwa with us today. His support means a great deal to all of us,” whispered one parent as the national anthem began.

For many families, the day represented more than just a graduation — it was the culmination of years of sacrifice, sleepless nights, and dreams fulfilled.

“We are thrilled to be part of this special day, surrounded by our loved ones and fellow graduates,” said one excited graduate, her gown fluttering in the breeze as she posed for pictures with her family.
