A 21-YEAR-OLD student at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) in Bulawayo, Karen Mhanda, has penned her sixth book titled “To the Guy Soon to Be Father 2,” which is set to be released on 29 November 2024.
Karen said she started writing at the age of 10 and released her first book, titled “Unchangeable State,” in 2019 after finishing her Ordinary Level.
She has been nominated for a few awards, including best author awards under Trend Setting, Phoenix Book Publishing Authors, and Universities Coaching and Mentoring awards.
Karen said that the inspiration for the book comes from the reality she sees in society, whereby many youths are prioritising fun and making decisions that negatively impact their future.
“The book serves as a guide to the livelihoods of the youth in terms of their sexual lives, mental health, families, social media influence, and peer pressure.
“It tells a story of how many in our generation are becoming parents too early in their lives, lacking the appropriate skills to deal with such a responsibility,” said Karen.
She stated that the book analyses the stigma associated with teenage pregnancy and how girls struggle with it.
“It depicts instances where girls face exclusion from peers, family, or community members, highlighting the emotional toll of stigma, feelings of shame and guilt, illustrating the internal struggle associated with being a teenage mother,” she said.
Karen further said that through the book she hopes that young people can be more considerate in their decision-making.
“I want young people to think more about how the decisions they take can and will impact their lives. I also want those in difficult situations to understand that they are not alone,” said Karen.
