Nust student spared jail for forgery

Tatenda Kugara (19), of Number 5827 Manyame Park, Chitungwiza, Harare, pleaded guilty to contravening Section 35 (e) of the Zimsec Act Number 17 of 1994 before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja.

He was fined $100 (or three months in prison), which was wholly suspended on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service.

Asked why he committed the offence, Kugara told the court that his parents did not know that he had failed and that he had to buy a forged result slip.

Ms Chosen Makanda, for the State, told the court that sometime in August last year, Kugara was admitted to Nust under the Faculty of Industrial Technology.

He presented a fake A-Level result slip purportedly obtained from Saint Francis Xavier Kutama and showing that he had obtained Grade C in Mathematics, B in Physics and C in Chemistry.

After admission he started attending lectures.

On 24 February this year, a tip-off to the effect that he was using a fictitious result slip was received.

He was arrested and Zimsec results showed that he had obtained a five in English Language and Communication, O in Mathematics, E in Physics and O in Chemistry.

He indeed sat for the examinations at Saint Francis Xavier Kutama.
