Nyakatawa takes golf to Hatcliffe

Centre for Golf is now in its fifth year running but has grown big this year and the number of kids taking part is now above 50.

Nyakatawa started the program and partnered with three schools and two other trainers from the location and they do their practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“Our aim is to develop the sport of golf to children in Hatcliffe,” said Nyakatawa.

“We are currently using the Hatcliffe High school grounds and three schools are turning out at the grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The kids are very enthusiastic about learning to play the game and they are usually punctual. The development has done well and it targets kids from Hatcliffe area aged between nine and 16 years of age,” she said.

Nyakatawa said with the help of professional golfer Julius Kamalizeni and Paul Masiri the other trainers started the program and are on course to meachieve their target.

“We initially started with five girls way back in 2009 and by now two of our products are now national team players, and one regularly represents the juniors.

“Because of the success of the program we have since decided to expand the program so that we cater for younger kids below six years as well.

“We have recieved support from the Borrowdale Brooke Rotary Club who have helped immensely
and of course the Hatcliffe High School who offer their grounds as our training facilities.

“The idea came because golf was viewed as an elite sport so we gave some young boys and girls an opprtunity to take part in the sport and some of them are excelling,” Nyakatawa said.
