Nyamasvisva salutes Mbuya Chiweshe

Trust Khosa in Masembura, BINDURA

SEASONED Mbira player, Wilfred “Nyamasvisva” MaAfrika, hailed the late mbira queen, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, as a professional who had her traditional roots at heart.

She lost her battle against cancer in Kuwadzana, Harare, last Friday.

The decorated Mbira music guru was buried at Nekati Village under Chief Masembura in Bindura

In an interview with H-Metro, Nyamasvisva described her death as a huge loss to the music industry

“Mbuya Chiweshe was a professional artist and cultural icon who touched the hearts of many with her music.

“She was a focused and determined artist who represented her Zimbabwean culture with pride. Despite settling well abroad with her late German husband, she never forgot her roots.

“She used to visit her homestead regularly and she had just set up an arts centre here for the benefit of the community,” he said.

Musically, Nyamasvisva said Mbuya Chiweshe taught him originality.

“She taught us to embrace our culture and being original. She was a distinct and hard working person, who defied odds,” he said.
