WHEN he started singing and writing songs at the tender age of 10, rising ZimDancehall artiste, Jonathan Hwerekwere, fondly known as “MaVendor Kid,” never thought he would make his parents proud.
The 16-year-old chanter, who is doing Form Three at Nyamauru High School in Dangamvura, is now reaping the fruits of his labour after the school offered him a full scholarship up to A-Level due to his sterling musical talent.
The school head, Mr Vitalis Chirenje this week confirmed the development, saying the move is part of their community social responsibility programme.
He said MaVendor Kid is the second learner in the history of the school to be offered a full scholarship for his talent in music. The school now has 50 learners with different talents who are also on full scholarships.
“Jonathan’s lyrical ingenuity is unbelievable. We have been nurturing learners with various talents since 2017. This is not about Jonathan only, but we have been giving some scholarships to talented learners, among them female soccer players,” said Mr Chirenje.
In an interview, MaVendor Kid’s parents could not hide their joy.
“We are extremely happy with the development. We never thought his talent in music and song writing would get him recognition at a tender age.
“We were initially not comfortable with his passion for music as he would sing even when eating. We started realising that he was so obsessed with music when he started composing his own songs while doing Grade Three.
“We realised that his music was not affecting his studies so we gave him our blessings. We thank God for this and we will continue to render him the support he needs. We thank God that he is managing to do well both in music and school.
“We also want to thank the school head for nurturing his talent. They started paying his school fees from Form One and they have offered him a full scholarship until he completes A-Level. The school head has been very supportive,” said his mother, Mrs Anna Muparutsa.
Some of the songs that the budding artistes has composed and recorded include “Kana ndapinda ndapinda,” “Pandinoimba,” “Ngavambotisiya,” “Style and pattern” and “Aiwa ndaramba”.
Mavendor Kid is currently riding high with a song and video titled “Nyamauru” which is dedicated to his school’s efforts to nurture learners’ talents.
