AFTER years of applying to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Nyanga was finally accorded town status, in a feat that will help attract investment and access to modern services.

Nyanga Rural District Council chief executive, Dr Zefania Jaravaza, confirmed the development, saying the nomination of the town board committee is currently underway.

Buhera, Chipinge and Rusape are some of the towns in Manicaland Province.

The development is set to propel growth in a district that has improved so much in terms of infrastructure.

The town now boasts of a spacious flea market which accommodates tens of people, refurbished urban roads, residential stands as well as street lights, developments that have seen the town growing vastly.

The district also boasts of tourism and accommodation facilities that can attract investment such as national parks and world class hotels.

Nyanga has been lagging behind in terms of accessing some other essential services.

The area boasts of a district hospital, district police headquarters and various Government departments among other infrastructure.

“We are in the process of working on the nomination of the town board committee.

“We are excited with the development since it was long overdue. This development means we are stepping in the right direction towards growth and expansion. The town board committee once in place is expected to scale the town to dizzy heights in terms of service delivery and infrastructural development, while an administrative structure with mandate to collect revenue and expend it locally will be put in place,” he said.

The development is set to see the town being home to new and rehabilitated infrastructure, while roads and road signage are set to improve.

Dr Jaravaza, however, said it was not the duty of the council only to woo investors, but individuals and organisations in Nyanga can also come on board.

“It is disturbing to note that people believe it is the duty of the council only to woo investors. Individuals and companies also have a role to play to woo investors.

“ I am disappointed when we hear that local authorities are not doing enough. As a council, we can only create an enabling environment.

“We have been trying our best to attract investors, with some of them getting the green light after we approved their applications, but they developed cold feet,” he added.
