Nyanga High School came tops in the recently held fourth edition of the HIV and AIDS provincial high schools quiz competition.
For their efforts, they walked away with a laptop, printer and a projector.
The competition held in Mutare last week was organized by the National AIDS Council in conjunction with Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
Representing the Nyanga District, Marist Brothers outshined six other schools from other districts.
On second position was Dangamvura High School which proudly took home a laptop and a projector.
Yester year provincial champions Kriste Mambo settled for fifth position.
Chipinge’s Gaza High School was voted third and also got a laptop and a projector.
Provincial Education Director, Mr Edward Shumba thanked the National AIDS Council for mobilizing resources for adolescent sexual and reproductive health education in schools.
He said: “The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has realized that the youths are the nation’s window of hope and they are the only ones who can keep an HIV free generation.”
The HIV and AIDS quiz was held soon after the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had launched the adolescent sexual reproductive health strategic plan.
In his closing remarks NAC’s monitoring and evaluation officer, Mr Simbarashe Maquina, said youths were a special group in HIV prevention and care.
“Youths should be involved in matters that affect them and they should uphold African values and culture since this will go a long way in increasing sexual debut amongst the youths. It is very worry some that the HIV prevalence among the youth aged between15 to 24 is 3.3percent for males and 6.7 percent for females according to the Zimbabwe demographic health survey of 2010/ 2011,” he said.
