Nhimbe Trust executive director Josh Nyapimbi has been appointed to the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Thematic Working Group, a development expected to strengthen advocacy for cultural rights and amplify the voices of artistes and cultural practitioners in national human rights discourse.

Nyapimbi will serve as a specialist in social and cultural rights within the working group, bringing extensive experience from Zimbabwe’s creative and cultural sector to a platform tasked with advancing human rights monitoring and policy engagement.

The thematic working group operates under the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, a constitutional body established in terms of Section 242 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Its mandate includes monitoring the country’s compliance with regional and international human rights obligations, with particular emphasis on the progressive realisation of economic, social and cultural rights without discrimination.

In a statement welcoming the appointment, Nhimbe Trust described the development as a significant milestone for the arts and culture sector, noting that it creates an important opportunity for cultural rights to gain greater recognition within national human rights frameworks.

The organisation said Nyapimbi’s appointment would help ensure that issues affecting creatives are reflected in policy discussions, accountability processes and human rights monitoring mechanisms.

“Having a representative from the creative sector within the national human rights institution ensures that the concerns and aspirations of artistes and cultural practitioners are directly reflected in policy discussions and human rights monitoring,” read part of the statement.

Nhimbe Trust said the appointment comes at a time when there is growing recognition of the role arts and culture play in social development, inclusion and community empowerment. The trust further highlighted that the thematic working group’s work is closely linked to regional and international human rights mechanisms, including the United

Nations Human Rights Council and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), where the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission holds Affiliate Status.

According to the organisation, discussions around economic, social and cultural rights at the continental level have traditionally focused on areas such as health, food security and climate change, often leaving cultural rights on the periphery. Nhimbe Trust believes Nyapimbi’s presence within the working group presents an opportunity to address that imbalance by generating evidence and advocacy that demonstrates the value of cultural rights as an integral component of human development and social justice.

The organisation said such efforts could contribute to shaping policy conversations not only in Zimbabwe, but also across the African continent.
