Nyati falls to his death

NYATI makes a stunning revelation that he washed in Sofia’s little sister, Tabitha’s blood. Sofia in shock asks: “So it’s you who killed Tabitha?” In response to this Nyati reveals his accomplice Takundwa. He says: “No, why should I do such dirty work myself when people like Takundwa are around?” Nyati tells Sofia that her father Joseph Takundwa did the killing of Tabitha for him.

Nyati is full of confidence all this time. He feels like he is in total control of the whole situation. He tells Sofia that there is nothing special about her after all. She is just another little daughter of a murderer. Having revealed all the truth about the death of Tabitha he decides to take out his gun and finish both Sofia and her boyfriend Jeremiah. His intended victims from his point of view are shaking in their shoes in fear of death.

Nyati thinks he is in total control of the situation at this juncture and laughs victoriously when he sees Sofia and Jeremiah shaking in fear. He deeps his hand into the pocket in which he normally carries his pistol. He fumbles nervously from pocket to pocket searching for his gun. Sofia can tell that something is amiss. Nyati celebrated his victory too early. He cannot find his gun and remembers that he could have left it in the drawer.

Sofia immediately seizes the opportunity and seizes the kitchen knife that is lying on top of the table just by her feet. She tells Nyati that he was going to pay for his sins. Sofia turns wild as she confronts Nyati. “I said I want my sister right now Satan! I quicken my step as I move towards my target. My intentions are clear. This is no longer the innocent and placid Sofia that both Nyati and Jeremiah have always known. This is a new me. I have become a stranger even to myself. Nyati does not like what he sees in my eyes.”

Tables turn and Nyati asks Sofia to wait and let him explain. Sofia asks: “Explain what? Explain how sweet my sister’s blood was in your evil mouth. Is that what you want to explain?” Nyati cannot stand Sofia’s mood and lies telling Sofia that he was teasing her. He wants to buy her forgiveness claiming he would give her anything. He would buy her a new car — a Mercedes Benz . . .” But Sofia does not listen to his excuses but demands her sister alive and well at that moment.

Sofia viciously swings her arm forward. That was the point when Nyati misplaced his foot. Within a split second Nyati was out through the window falling headlong onto the hard concrete floor of the basement. Sofia was still holding the  kitchen knife when he reached the ground floor. When she got there a small crowd had gathered around Nyati’s body. Sofia tells her mother that she now knows everything. She tells her that they murdered Tabitha without revealing the identity of the murderers.

She goes on to reveal that the murderers are Nyati and her mother’s husband. She shudders to call Takundwa her father at that heated moment. She says: “Yes, your husband and Nyati. Mother, the very same man who is your husband is the man who murdered your daughter. Can you understand that mother?” Fatima, Sofia’s mother was too stunned to answer. After informing her mother about Tabitha’s death, Sofia turned herself in at the nearest police station. This is the reason why we find Sofia in jail.

She tells us that this is the moment she has been waiting for, for the past six months. She cannot tell whether the judges are going to set her free or convict her. She says the judges should be prepared to hear her side of the story. She says: “Today I am going to turn the silence into a battle song. Today I am going to break the bricks of silence. Will tomorrow be brighter than today? How come the jail guard is taking so long to arrive? Or is time playing tricks with my mind again? Here in prison a minute and an hour are just the same”.

What happened to Nyati? Nyati had died on his way to the hospital. He had suffered a severely fractured skull. Sofia was therefore going to be tried of culpable homicide. The next day, Sofia learnt from her mother about her father’s death. He had hung himself with a piece of barbed wire. Sofia hated her father to the extent that she says she never shed a single tear-drop for him. The perpetrators of evil are all gone. Is it not clear that good eventually conquers evil?

As Sofia enters the courtroom what rings in her mind is that the moment of truth has finally arrived. She believes that the truth is the holy chariot abode which she will ride to freedom. Sofia ends her story by pleading with the judges to at least afford him the chance to tell her story . . .
