Nyerere to be first president

MR (Julius) Nyerere, has been elected Tanganyika’s first President.

Latest results give him a lead over his opponent, Mr Z. Mtemvu, which cannot be reversed even if all remaining registered voters in the country vote for Mr Mtemvu. Mr Nyerere has secured 97 per cent of all votes cast so far. He is now President-designate and will assume office on December 9, says our Dar es Salaam correspondent.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere, was a pivotal figure in the struggle for independence not only in Tanzania, but across Southern Africa.

His leadership and vision were crucial, as he advocated for non-violent protest inspired by figures like Mahatma Gandhi. Following successful negotiations with British authorities, Tanganyika (now Tanzania) achieved independence on December 9, 1961.

As the first President of Tanzania, he became a symbol of Pan-African unity and liberation. His leadership was characterised by a commitment to social justice, equality and the empowerment of marginalised groups.

Under Nyerere’s guidance, Tanzania positioned itself as a staunch ally to various liberation movements throughout Southern Africa. He believed that the freedom of one nation was intrinsically linked to the freedom of others.

This philosophy led him to provide political, material, and moral support to neighbouring countries struggling against colonialism and apartheid.

Nyerere’s government hosted many liberation movements within its borders. Organisations such as the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa and the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) found refuge and operational bases in Tanzania. This support was crucial for these movements as they organised their campaigns against oppressive regimes.

The OAU Liberation Committee was based in Tanzania during its formative years, reflecting Nyerere’s commitment to aiding liberation struggles beyond his country’s borders. His vision extended beyond mere political independence; he sought socio-economic development for all African nations.
