THE Highlanders duo of Gabriel Nyoni and Knox Mutizwa have been called up into the the Young Warriors squad that will take on Botswana in an international friendly on September 30. The match will be part of the host nation’s Independence Day commemorations. ZPC Kariba head coach Saul Chaminuka and Hwange’s Nation Dube will be in charge of the Olympic squad in the absence of Callisto Pasuwa who will be in Egypt for a Fifa training programme for national team coaches and a review of the World Cup held in Brazil in July.
The technical team, led by head coach Pasuwa, selected a youthful side as they begin preparations for qualifiers of the 2015 DR Congo Under-23 African Championship, 2015 Congo All Africa Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Qualifiers of the Under-23 African Championship begin in April 2015.
The top three teams at the DR Congo Under-23 African Championship shall qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016.
Zifa spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said the team will troop into camp on Saturday and leave on Sunday.
“We expect the boys to be in camp by Saturday evening and they will travel on Sunday. After this game this newly assembled team will be subjected to numerous friendly matches to afford coaches ample time to assess, improve and modify it before the qualifiers commence,” said Gwesela in a statement.
After the Botswana game, the Young Warriors are scheduled to play Tanzania and Morocco on October 8 and November 16 respectively.
