Observe traffic rules!

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has warned motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to observe traffic rules in a bid to stop road carnage along the country’s high ways.
In a notice, the council advised motorists and the traveling public to stop road carnage by minimizing human error.
“More than 90 percent of all road traffic accidents are due to human error which includes misjudgment, overtaking, inattention, distraction, speeding, drinking and driving, negligence by drivers, pedestrians or cyclists and fatigue,” reads the notice.
“Defensive driving help eradicate human error. Report dangerous driving and road collision to the council.”
The festive season usually experiences an escalation of traffic accidents in Zimbabwe.
TSCZ managing director, Mr Obio Chinyere said that people from all walks of life should exercise extreme caution at all times ahead of the festive season.
“It is not only motorists’ duty to exercise caution but everyone’s duty to observe road safety rules and regulations to avoid road carnage.
“As usual, we urge motorists to avoid over-speeding, night driving, drunk driving, and to check the condition of their vehicles before embarking on any journey and to observe traffic rules and regulations.
“We advise the passengers to know their rights and if necessary to tell the driver that he is over-speeding or report reckless drivers to traffic police at road blocks.
Motorists should prepare their journeys in time during this period to avoid night driving and over speeding.
“Lastly I would like to recommend commercial vehicle owners not to overwork their drivers so as to maximise profits during the festive season, drivers should have time to rest,” said Mr Chinyere.
A total of 87 road accidents were recorded on Christmas day last year, with the number of people killed on the same day being 10.
