Occupy London enters third day

protesters opposed to the global economic system remaining encamped outside St Paul’s Cathedral.
“The current system is unsustainable.

“It is undemocratic and unjust. We need alternatives; this is where we work towards them,” the occupation said in a statement.
“We are of all ethnicities, backgrounds, genders, generations, sexualities disabilities and faiths.
“We stand together with occupations all over the world. We refuse to pay for the banks’ crisis,” it said.

The encampment of up to 100 tents was set up after police barricades blocked the original plan to occupy the London Stock Exchange in nearby Paternoster Square on Saturday.
Rather than requesting their removal from the cathedral steps on Sunday, the Rev Dr Giles Fraser, canon chancellor of St Paul’s, asked that the police themselves move on.
“I didn’t feel that it needed that sort of protection,” the cannon said as the police agreed to adopt a more low-profile presence in contrast to the initial confrontation by officers dressed in riot gear.

The heart of the capital’s financial district, which is the target of the rolling protest but on Saturday police and private security guards prevented.
Occupy London was launched as part of a united day of actions that took place in 951 cities in 83 countries around the world in opposition to the global financial system on October 15.

In its statement, the London campaigners said they “stand in solidarity with the global oppressed and we call for an end to the actions of our government and others in causing this oppression.”
“We do not accept the cuts as either necessary or inevitable. We demand an end to global tax injustice and our democracy representing corporations instead of the people,” it also said, while expressing support for strike action planned by trade inions.

Meanwhile, Occupy Canada protesters geared up for yesterday morning rush hour appearance.
People heading to work today in some of Canada’s major cities were expected to be greeted with a noisy reception as Occupy Canada protesters carry on protests they started during the weekend.

In Toronto, online postings suggested there may be two streams of protesters winding along downtown streets.
A message posted by Occupy Toronto on Facebook said there would also be a march and rally at Ryerson University later in the day.

Jared Khan, a volunteer with Occupy Toronto’s media team which updates the movement’s website, Facebook pages and Twitter account said the protesters were working hard to grow their ranks. – IRNA/The Canadian Press.
