OLD Georgians coach Grant Mitchell says he expects a thrilling derby when they play city rivals Harare Sports Club in a National Rugby League match at OGs this afternoon. Matches between Old Georgians and Sports Club have been tight affairs and Mitchell hopes his team will emerge triumphant. “This is a traditional rivalry and one that both clubs look forward to each season,” said Mitchell.
“We relish these contests as they challenge our abilities and highlight the intrinsic strength of the club.’
Mitchell has decided to give young Sean Coles his debut today and he could be playing as the fullback, while flanker Fortune Chipendu and veteran Jacques Leitao will, as usual, be expected to lead the side.
“We expect nothing less than the best from both teams. That is what rivalries are all about, that is how traditions are generated — through strength versus strength contest every time we meet,” he said.
The game is important for OGs as it could give them an indicator of their strength this season and their coach feels that they will draw comfort from playing at home in Groombridge.
“The players thoroughly enjoy the limited opportunities they get to play on their home ground, the opportunity to perform in front of our Groombridge-based support.
“This is always an advantage.
“We have made some great new signings in the off-season; they are all talented young players that have bright futures in Zimbabwe rugby.
“Andrew Rose has returned to the club to play and we are excited about that, his abilities and leadership (qualities) are great assets,” he said.
In the other matches today, Old Hararians meet Zvishavane Bulls, while Panthers play Gweru in a southern region derby.
Meanwhile, the Old Mutual High Density Schools Rugby Development Programme will gather momentum when select sides from Chitungwiza, Mabvuku and Mbare play at Harare Sports Club today.
