Old Georgians have lifted this year’s edition of the Sevens Summer Series after a 24-15 victory over city rivals Harare Sports Club on Saturday. On their way to the final, the Dragons overcame Matabeleland Busters 17-7 in the semi-finals while Sports Club dismissed Northern Academy 25-10 in the other semi-final. Old Georgians topped Pool A, which had Western Panthers, and a Northern Academy side made up of mostly Under-19 players.

Coached by former Zimbabwe Rugby Union general manager Grant Mitchell, OGs thumped the youthful Northern Academy 47-7 and hammered Panthers 33-0.

Harare Sports Club topped Pool B after beating Matabeleland Busters 17-4 and then overcoming rivals Old Hararians 26-5.

In the final, Sports Club’s Taddy Whata, Stephan Hunduza and Takudzwa Francisco scored tries but this was not enough to stop the OGs machine.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union were using the Summer Series to select the Cheetahs team for the African Rugby Sevens set for the end of this month at Harare Sports Club.

Northern Academy coach Shaun De Souza,  said he was happy with the level of competition at the festival.

“The level of competition was very high, if you look at my boys they played against big teams who’ve some of the national team players. Although the boys didn’t win, we were very happy to be at the tournament, it was a learning curve for them. “I just hope that one of the younger players will make it into the Cheetahs team,” said De Souza.
