The city’s fire brigade failed to put down the fire in time and to save goods.
Ninety percent of the city’s fire fighting equipment is not working raising fears that in the event of a major fire outbreak the safety of residents and property would be compromised.
“Council accepts with appreciation, the donation of three Perkins engines purchased by OK Zimbabwe to be fitted on the broken down emergency services fire tenders,” reads part of recent full council minutes.
Most of the fire fighting equipment was bought in the 1990s and has outlived usefulness.
Donors have always assisted the city with fire tenders.
Last year Mr Peter Lobel gave the city two fire tenders and has promised to buy more.
His donation followed another fire incident that claimed the life of former army general Cde Solomon Mujuru at his farm in Beatrice.
