In a statement, Econet said the retail chain will be performing agent services for EcoCash throughout its branches across the country.
“Through the partnership, every OK outlet will be able to register customers for EcoCash and also perform cash in and cash out functions for EcoCash,” said the statement.
Econet services chief executive officer Mr Darlington Mandivenga said that the goal of the partnership was to increase accessibility of EcoCash to as many potential customers as possible.
“As the largest retail chain with 54 outlets countrywide, OK Zimbabwe has significant traffic in their stores, and we therefore saw the opportunity to provide EcoCash services in their branch network to cater for these customers,” he said.
He said the partnership was the first phase with the natural development seeing OK stores operating as a merchant for EcoCash, which will enable customers shopping at our stores to make payments using EcoCash.
The chief operating officer of OK Zimbabwe, Mr Albert Katsande, said that the partnership with EcoCash was in line with their move to penetrate the financial services sector and the partnership would attract over two million EcoCash customers to OK Zimbabwe.
“Naturally, the customer will find it more convenient to shop in our stores,” he said.
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mr Douglas Mboweni said the company intended to partner with as many parties as possible into the EcoCash system.
“We want to partner with as many players as possible for the benefit of our customers,” he said.
