OLD Hararians emerged from the Harare derby against Harare Sports Club with their heads high when they upstaged the hosts to walk away with the bragging rights in tightly-contested Lion Lager National Rugby League match at the weekend. Old Boys, who at one stage were trailing narrowly, made the most of the second half opportunities as they forced a 31-20 victory.
Sports Club winger Teddy “Boxer” Hwata was the leading light for the home side but his efforts were all in vain after scoring two brilliant tries, two conversions and a penalty.
The hosts had started the match on good note and in the first half they were in control of the ball. The second half saw both teams coming with force and at one point Sports Club were leading 20-19 but they lost the steam and could not continue to put their opponents under more pressure.
In another encounter, Old Georgians continued their fine run in week 11 of the league after beating the visiting Matebeleland Warriors 61-27.
Matebeleland Warriors captain Lucky Sithole said they let themselves down earlier in the game as they got off to a poor start.
“We did not start our match on a good note hence our opponents capitalised on that. In the second half we tried to wake up and we got 27 points but it was too late and we lost.
“We also had five of our players down with injuries. Some play for the national team and could not take part in this game. I believe that also contributed to our loss but that is part of the game, we will do better in our next fixture.
“Our next fixture will be played at home and we are definitely going to win. We will ensure that we utilise home advantage,” said Sithole.
Elsewhere, Old Miltonians drew 10-10 against Western Panthers in their fixture at Hartsfield in Bulawayo.
Western Panthers, however, finished one man down as their eighth-man Simbarashe Jowa was given a red card.
Hosts Zvishavane Bulls suffered a 14-12 defeat at the hands of Gweru at Mac–Adam Stadium.
