Old Gwanda Road Redevelopment sparks household relocation plan

A PROJECT to realign and redevelop the Old Gwanda Road into a tolled highway has necessitated the relocation of several households, according to a report released by Zwane Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd.

The ambitious initiative, spearheaded by Engineer Bekithemba Mbambo, aims to improve accessibility for locals and travellers but has raised emotional and logistical challenges for the affected residents.

The Old Gwanda Road Project was initiated three years ago to address the deteriorating state of the road and the hardships it caused for nearby communities. Despite initial resistance and bureaucratic delays, the project is now in its final stages, with plans to provide comprehensive support for the displaced families.

The relocation involves detailed planning to ensure a smooth transition for the households impacted by the road’s new alignment.

Zwane Enterprises has outlined a multi-step outreach program that includes:

1. Community Engagement: Local chiefs and traditional leaders will introduce the plans to affected communities.
2. Design Options: Town planners and architects will present new village layouts, featuring modern amenities such as waterborne toilets.
3. Implementation Timelines: Villagers will be provided with clear timelines to mitigate uncertainty.

The relocation team includes town planners, land surveyors, logistics specialists, and a documentary crew tasked with recording the process for transparency.

Zwane Enterprises acknowledges the emotional toll of the relocation, which may involve leaving behind ancestral homes and sacred sites.

To address these concerns, the outreach team has committed to engaging with communities respectfully and providing tailored options for the resettlement process.

The one-week outreach program begins today, with the first community visits scheduled for November 28 and 29. The final report will be presented to Zwane Enterprises’ CEO on December 2, 2024.

This redevelopment promises improved infrastructure and economic opportunities, but it must balance progress with the preservation of community ties and cultural heritage.
