THE Old Mutual Cricket Academy will play host to their prestigious grassroots development tournament — the Fazak-Technoexpert Colts Cricket Cup Finals on Saturday.
Ten teams vying for the prestigious Fazak-Technoexpert Colts Cricket Cup are Whitestone School, Petra Junior, Tuskers Development, Riverdale Academy, Masiyephambili School, Charleston Trust, SOS Primary, Mahlathini School, Ndlovu Iyanyathela School, Baibes Junior and the Old Mutual Cricket Academy.
Joseph Rego, the president and board chairman of the Old Mutual Cricket Academy, an architect of grassroots cricket development in Zimbabwe confirmed the event yesterday.
The Fazak Technoexpert Cricket Cup is an initiative that was launched two years ago and is sponsored by city businessman and philanthropist Zakir Hawa.
Rego said he is happy with the academy which continues to attract corporate partners and its emphasis on grassroots-level development and age group structures.
“We are happy with those in the corporate sector like Hawa who share our vision and passion in these programmes,” said Rego.
He said such gestures give those who drive development programmes to do more for the sport.
Rego said Arthur Evans, a media personality was among the sponsors for the weekend event.
He said Hawa, a former Highlanders junior, a former sports columnist and Ethan will serve as an inspiration to the budding cricketers.
“The testimony to their philanthropy, good deeds and genuine love and passion for sport is the Fazak Technoexpert Cricket Coaching Clinic and the Fazak Technoexpert Colts Cricket Cup that supports budding and aspiring cricketers. Those with a desire to learn are afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities with the hopes that they may one day represent their school, university, club, province or even country with pride, determination and above all – a smile,” said Rego.
He said the day is a family fun day with several side activities.
