PREPARATIONS for the 2014 Old Mutual Vumba Mountain Run competitions slated for November 8 are on track, the organiser, Byran Rocher, has confirmed. The annual mountain run which is now in its fourth edition will as usual have three categories in the 5km, 10km and 21km races.
The marathon is arguably the toughest marathon race in the country because of the mountainous terrain.
Rocher said there have been plenty of inquiries about the race ever since they announced online and on social platforms.
He said they were expecting more athletes this year exceeding the 300 who took part last year.
“People have been calling locally and regionally from Mozambique and South Africa inquiring about the race.
“We are anticipating a bigger turnout this year given the number of inquiries we have been getting.
“Preparations are on course and we are just urging everyone interested in the race to come and sign up on time,” said Rocher.
The winner of the 21km and 10km races will walk away with US$1 000 and US$500 prizes for the male and female categories respectively, while the winner of the 5km fun race will get a consolation prize.
Rocher said entries closed on November 5.
He said in Manicaland interested contestants could register at Body Focus Gym, but elsewhere they could get in touch with him at Leopard Rock Hotel.
Last year, veteran South Africa-based marathon runner Rutendo Nyahora and Collin Kanyimo won the 21km race in the female and male categories respectively.
Kanyimo finished the race in 1hr 9mins 53secs, while Nyahora completed the race in 1hr 20mins 18secs.
