Old Mutual, Zimbabwe cricket franchises rekindle romance

This move rekindles the relationship between both parties that had been put on hold about seven years ago due to the harsh economic challenges. Cricket like many sporting disciplines in the country was also not been spared from the wrath of the tough oeprating environment.

To address this call corporate giant Old Mutual signed a deal with ZC’s five franchises to roll out a US$150 000 package towards the development of the sport. The partnership was agreed upon in July last year and this morning’s ceremony marks the official hand over to the franchises where the company’s group chief executive officer Jonas Mushosho, Ministry of Education Sport, Arts and Culture’s provincial education director for Matabeleland Dan Moyo, Board Members and chief executives for all the five franchises are expected to grace the occasion.

Matabeleland Tuskers senior team led by captain Gavin Ewing will also attend the ceremony. Mashonaland Eagles chief executive officer Vimbai Mapukute said they are happy that the sponsors have come on board and they have a specific arrangement with the sponsor on the distribution of the equipment.

“This is a welcome arrangement and we are excited about this, it is good for the development of the sport, which has long suffered because of lack of funding. We have a very specific arrangement with the sponsor on the distribution of this equipment across all schools and development centers.
“We have targeted schools and High Performance Centres whose facilities are now in a dilapidated state,” said Mapukute.

His Matebeleland Tuskers counterpart Stanley Staddonalso expressed hapiness with the develeopment package.
“We are ready for this kind of partnership as the custodians of the game in the country. It can only mean good for the development of the game. We give thanks to Old Mutual for this gesture,” said Staddon.
