Omnibus driver cop killer arrested

POLICE have arrested the commuter omnibus driver who allegedly crushed to death a police officer at the Esigodini tollgate on 1 September.Acting Matabeleland South provincial police spokesman Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the arrest of Zenzo Nkomo (30) of House Number 3386 Gwabalanda in Bulawayo.

Nkomo allegedly crushed Constable Jester Macherera (28) against a pillar after failing to control the speeding commuter omnibus he was driving.

Nkomo and two passengers allegedly fled from the scene on foot after realising that he had killed the officer. The officer died after sustaining serious chest injuries and fractures on both hips.

“On the evening of 20 September we received information that the suspect had been seen at Pumula Clinic and                                      we assigned an informer to monitor his movements before we arrested him in Old Pumula suburb,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya

He commended members of the public for providing the information.
