OLD Miltonians fought hard to record a win over visitors Mutare Sports Club in a disorganised National Rugby League match played at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo yesterday. The match was marred by chaotic scenes as it had to be stopped for a while with 15 minutes to go once referee Thembelani Ncube realised that the Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society owned ambulance service Netstar had decided to take away the ambulance from the match venue. The match only resumed when the vehicle returned. Continuing with the match without an ambulance would have put the lives of the players at risk just in case a serious injury occurred.
It was a tightly contested encounter which went to the halftime break with the score 0-0 as the two teams failed to make use of the chances which came their way. Particularly OMs had their flyhalf George Savada to blame for missing two kickable kicks at goal which both went wide off the posts.
Both teams scored two tries each, loose forwards Michael Zvakavapano and Jason Mackay going over for OMs with both tries being converted by Savada while the visitors got their five pointers from winger Casper Bandi and Joel Rukweza with the only try being converted.
In other NRL matches played, defending champions Old Hararians hammered Zvishavane Bulls 119-3 in their own backyard, Western Panthers won 26-20 against Gweru Sports Club in Gweru and last season’s runners-up Old Georgians defeated 2012 champions Harare Sports Club 14-12 in a match played at HSC.
