BULAWAYO’s oldest rugby club Old Miltonians (OMs) will hold a fundraising tournament to raise money for next season at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds tomorrow.
After missing the National Rugby League semi-finals playoffs by a whisker, OMs are set to start their preparations for next season early.
OMs lost most of their star players to rivals Matabeleland Warriors because they lacked funds to sustain the team.
National Rugby League champions Old Hararians will be the guest team in the fundraising tournament.
Western Panthers, Bulldogs, Matabeleland Warriors are the city clubs set to participate in the event.
OMs acting team manager Emmanuel Mukandi said the preparations for the event were in full swing.
“Everything is set for the tournament, most youngsters will get a chance to showcase their talent, we are raising funds to recruit new players for next season,” said Mukandi.
He said there would be a lot of activities on the day.
“There will be a full bar and catering, it will be a family fun day. We expect people to come in numbers and support us,” he said.
OMs will also hold an awards ceremony at Kudu Bar to mark the end of the season.
“This will be an opportunity to honour the players that excelled throughout the season and those who got a national team call up. There will also be surprise awards for some members of OMs,” he said.
OMs have produced the likes of national team coach Brendon Dawson, Norman Mukondiwa and Vusumuzi Ndebele.
For the past two seasons they have lost a number of promising up-and-coming talent to Warriors because of financial challenges.
